Getting prepared to teach and learn online with Google Classroom

Accessing Google Classroom

  1. Log in to your Staff Portal

  2. Click on ‘My Learning Tools’ hyperlink on the left hand side of your Portal 

  3. Click the ‘GSuite (Google Apps for education)’ link 

  4. Click ‘Classroom’

Google Classroom can also be easily accessed via the DoE Student Portal. 

  1. Log in to the Student Portal

  2. In the ‘Learning’ section on the right hand side, click 'GSuite (Google Apps for education)'

  3. Click 'Classroom'

 

Instructions

  1. Find and install the Google Classroom App from the App store

  2. Open the Google Classroom App

  3. Sign in to your Google account using your @education.nsw.gov.au account details. E.g. firstname.lastname1@education.nsw.gov.au

  4. Your Google Classroom will now open in the App

 

Setting up a Classroom

  1. Open the Google Classroom Dashboard

  2. Click on the plus icon in the top right hand corner

  3. Select 'Create class'

  4. Populate the form as required (only the class name is mandatory)

  5. Click 'Create'

  1. Go to 'Settings'

  2. Check if 'Invite codes' is turned on. Use the drop down arrow to turn on 'Invite codes' if required

  3. A URL invite link will now appear

  4. Copy to your clipboard by clicking on the copy icon (two pages siting on top of each other). You can now paste this link in an email or other electronic document for your students to click on

OR

  1. Go to the 'People' tab
  2. Scroll down to 'Students'
  3. Click the 'Invite students' icon (person with plus symbol)
  4. Copy the URL link by clicking the copy icon

  1. Go to the 'People' tab
  2. Scroll down to 'Students' and click on the 'Invite Students' icon
  3. Start typing in their student email address
  4. Select student from the list that appears
  5. Click 'Invite'

Email notifications

There are a few options available to you in terms of email notifications. 

  • You can turn off all notifications and you will not receive notifications for any classes

  • You can turn off notifications by class 

  • You can customise to receive notifications on comments, submissions, mentions

 

  1. Open the Google Classroom Dashboard

  2. Click the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) to access the menu

  3. Click the cog icon to access settings

  4. To disable all notifications toggle the top blue switch

  5. To disable notifications by class scroll down to the bottom of the page and toggle the required blue switch

  6. To disable specific notifications, toggle the blue switches as required

Communicating in Google Classroom

  1. Click 'Stream' at the top
  2. Click in the box that says 'Share something with your class'
  3. Start typing a post to the stream
  4. Click the 'Post' button when you complete typing

  1. Click 'Stream' at the top
  2. Click in the box that says 'Share something with your class'
  3. Start typing a post to the stream
  4. Click the 'Add' button in the bottom left
  5. Choose to attach a file from your Google Drive, a link from the internet, a file from your computer or embed a video from Youtube 
  6. Multiple files can be attached in the one post
  7. Click the blue Post button to send the post

You can then post a link to your video or audio or upload your video or audio using the steps above.

  1. Click the cog icon, in the top right side of the screen
  2. Scroll down to where it says stream
  3. Click the downward facing arrow to the right of stream
  4. Select the posting permissions you would like
  5. Click the 'Save' button that appears at the top right to save the permissions
