Digital communication in the classroom

Bringing community into the classroom

Meet Mikaela Cashin, as the Digital Classroom Officer (DCO) for Cabbage Tree Island Public School, a pre-school to Year 6 school based in Ballina on the North Coast of NSW, she reinvigorated the school operations through developing a new digital program within the school.

This small, isolated school has 40 Aboriginal students enrolled, with a school staff of 10, including teaching and support staff. Due to the school’s demographic and location, it encourages community involvement from the Aunties and Uncles and the Elders in the community. It was an integral decision to ensure that community elders are employed in active roles as SLSOs, AEOs, and in the leadership team for the school.

Before Mikaela introduced the digital program for Cabbage Tree Island Public School, there wasn’t an engaged level of a digital presence, which made every day admin tasks, communication and student engagement a challenge.

Mikaela undertook the task of creating a program designed to create a bank of digital resources that could continue to be developed over time. In this initiative the school used a combination of MLDs as a digital resource as well as hands-on resources. This would then create a bank of resources that could continue to be developed and expanded upon over time.

One of the main areas of focus in the initiative was to incorporate cultural history, stories, saving voice and language and values of the community. This was achieved by hosting community event days, where families, Aunties, Uncles and Elders could see the success of the students in the classroom firsthand. They achieved this by using MLDs to create PowerPoint presentations to display what is being taught in the class, including photos and videos of the kids on their learning journey.

At the community event days parents and friends could see the shift in each students’ connection with tech, from being glued to screens in their downtime to using tech as an effective learning tool.

Inspired by the success of the digital program Cabbage Tree Island Public School will continue to integrate the whole schools’ operations into the digital space. Encouraging all staff to build and develop the digital map for a one-stop location for all resources and links. They will also continue building their classroom lessons utilising the interactive tools of the MLD.

Students then became excited in sharing their stories and learning about culture through the tech supported programs, such as creating self-portraits by using Canva and Google Drawings in their art classes.

Without Mikaela’s initiative and perseverance, Cabbage Tree Island Public School would not have seen the increase in community visibility, and the joy and excitement for students when they see their work come to life in the digital sphere. Thereby creating a collaborative and community focused environment for students to thrive.

Take the time to watch Mikaela’s presentation and hear more on how much joy this program gave to students and inspired the community. Mikaela and the school are really delighted with the success of the program, especially seeing the staff’s confidence grow and the creation of resources that will provide lasting learning for future years.
