This is the transcript of the "Reading Progress - Part 1 teacher view" video.
Speaker 1:
Hi there. In this video, we will look at one of the learning accelerators in class Teams, Reading Progress. This is a tool to complement and support your teaching and learning programme in reading and literacy. Reading Progress gets students to record their reading on camera and submit it to the teacher.
To begin using Reading Progress, navigate to the desired class, then select Assignments from the channel list on the left-hand side of the screen. Select Create, then Assignment. Enter a title for the assignment. This is required. In the middle of the screen, click Learning Accelerators and select Reading Progress from the drop-down menu. To select a passage for students to read, there are three options to choose from. Upload Word or PDF to use files within a class Notebook, Teams files or OneDrive, Generate Reading Passage using AI, or select Browse sample library to use passages that are pre-made.
Let's look at the three ways to select your passage. You only need to select one of these per Reading Progress activity.
Click Import Word or PDF, then choose the location of the Word or PDF document. Click the file and select Attach. As this passage is not pre-made, the teacher can click on Edit and modify the text. After making any changes, click the tick in the bottom right-hand corner of the window. Click Generate Reading Passage. Four drop-down menus will appear to assist customising the passage for the class. Choose from a range of topics, the age of the reader, length of the passage, and the language to be used. The teacher can choose what language the passage is to be generated in, and it also gives a list of challenging words from previous readings. These can be unticked if you don't want to use them.
Click Generate Reading Passage. Review the passage that has been generated. It's always a good idea to do this. Use the up and down arrows next to the word Complexity to revise the wording used in the passage. Once ready, click Use Passage. The teacher can click on Edit and modify the text. After making any changes, click the tick in the bottom right-hand corner of the window.
Click Browse Sample Library. Choose the appropriate grade level, and then select a passage to read. Click Preview to view the text that the students will read. Once ready, click Select.
Once your passage is prepared, review the options located on the right-hand side of the screen. You can enter a reading level and select the genre. Click the drop-down area next to the number of attempts to determine how many times the students can read the passage. Click the drop-down menu next to time limit to set a timer for reading the passage. Pronunciation sensitivity specifies how strict the teacher would like auto-detect to be when listening and estimating errors. Choose Less Sensitive to leave it more flexible for pronunciation, and More Sensitive to demand more exact reading performance. This setting is adjustable when reviewing student work. Reading Coach identifies the five words that were most challenging for each individual student and gives them a supported opportunity to practise the words again. The teacher can toggle this on or off. Click Edit to decide what tools the students can have access to, which voice the students hear when the word is read back to them, and the prompt style. Make sure you click Save once finished adjusting these settings.
Toggling on Add Comprehension allows the teacher to create questions asked in a Microsoft form to assess the student's understanding of the passage. The teacher can choose to add their own multiple choice or short response questions, or use AI to generate the questions for them. The last toggle button allows the teacher to record a video of the student's reading. Click Next to attach the Reading Progress task to the assignment. Adjust any other assignment settings. For more information on these, refer to the video regarding Assignments in Teams. Click Assign to distribute the task to the students.
