Transcript of the 'Speech recognition - Windows 11' video

This is the transcript of the 'Speech recognition - Windows 11' video.

Speaker 1

In this video, we will run through how to use voice typing on a Windows 11 computer. If you aren't sure what operating system you have on your T4L device, you can see it in the desktop information under edition. Alternatively, you can go to the Windows icon at the bottom of your screen, find the settings app and open system, and then about. For dictation to work, you will need to be in a space that requires text. I'm going to open word for this demonstration. The most simple way to turn on voice typing is to just hold down the Windows key and the letter H at the same time.

You will automatically see a microphone icon pop up. When the microphone is blue, it is listening to your speech. If you tap the microphone, the icon will turn white and it is no longer listening to you. You can also stop the microphone by using the shortcut Windows H again. You will also notice a settings cog to the left of the microphone icon and a question mark to the right. In settings, you will see a few different options. The first is voice typing launcher. If you toggle this switch, voice typing will always be available when you are inside of a text box.

You will also notice that you have the ability to turn on or off automatic punctuation. You can choose to toggle this on or use voice commands for your punctuation. When you select the question mark icon, you will go to the help page. Here you will find the instructions on how to change languages and a list of commands you can use to edit voice typing and punctuation. The cross will close the application and you'll need to use the shortcut to open it again. Another way to access speech to text on a Windows device is by opening the on-screen touch keyboard.

You need to right click on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, hit taskbar settings next to touch keyboard you will see a drop-down menu, select always, and you should be able to see a keyboard icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the taskbar. If you can't see the icon, you may need to click on the up arrow and look through the hidden icons. When you select the keyboard icon, your touch keyboard will pop up on your screen. Next to the space bar, you will see a microphone icon, hit this icon to start voice typing. You will see a settings cog where you can enable and disable punctuation.

The cross in the right-hand corner of the keyboard space will close the keyboard. For more guides on available accessibility tools, make sure you have a look at the other videos in this series on the T4L website.
