Hi. In this video we are going to explore an exciting new feature integrated into Google Classroom assignments called a Read Along. This new feature supports differentiated learning by allowing teachers to assign the reading activities based on the story's Lexile level or selected grade level. Here is how it works.
To assign the reading material, you will first need to go to your Google Classroom and select your class. At the top of the screen, click on Classwork, and then select Create, and then Assignment. You can name your assignment here and add a few instructions in the description box if you wish.
In the list of attachments, select Read Along. You will be prompted to choose between Decodables, which focus on specific letter-sound relationships, or a range of fictional and non-fictional levelled readers. Once you have selected the text, you can preview it by clicking on the Try as a Student button. To finish adding the Read Along task to the assignment, click Attach. Finally, select the students or student groups if these have been previously set up, as well as set some of the optional features like the due date before clicking on the Assign button in the top right-hand corner.
Read Along helps students build independent reading skills as they receive real-time feedback and encouragement during reading.

Once students have completed the assignment, teachers have access to valuable insights into individual students' reading, including data on accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and progress over time. Read Along is safe to use as all speech recognition occurs in the browser and it is not saved, ensuring children's voice data remains private. Read Along is designed to support and enhance literacy teaching and learning programs. It complements but does not replace the role of the teacher or standard assessment tasks.
