Transcript of 'Google Classroom - Getting started' video

This is the transcript of the "Google Classroom - Getting started" video.

Speaker 1:

Welcome to your tutorial on how to get started with Google Classroom. Google Classroom amplifies teaching and learning by providing easy access to learning content, seamless integration with other Google apps, and real-time feedback. It fosters engagement, collaboration and parental involvement, whilst also promoting a paperless environment. Let's get started.

Firstly, sign in to your Google account via the portal and click Classroom. Once you're on the Google Classroom homepage, you may see some other classrooms you're a part of. To create a new Google Classroom, click on the plus icon on the top right-hand corner, and then click Create class. Next, give your class a name. This part is required, whilst the other sections are optional. You are now in your Google Classroom stream page. Stream is where you can communicate with your class through announcements. You can also customise the class theme to make it more visually appealing or contextual by clicking on the Customise button.

Down the left, you will see an option to create a Google Meet link. Please see the Google Meet for online class meetings video for more information on this feature. You also have your class code, which is what will be shared with those students who wish to join your class. You can share this link or copy the code for your students to join here. Another way is to guide your students into joining the Google Classroom by typing in the code themselves. You can enlarge it for easy viewing by clicking here. The last box is where any upcoming assignments you have posted will be visible to all in the Google Classroom.

You will notice a small cog in the stream section, where you can customise some of your settings. One to note is the ability for students to make announcements and comments in the stream. Consider your class and how you are going to set up your Google Classroom and choose accordingly here. These settings can also be changed at any time. You will see some tabs across the top. The next one along is Classwork. This is where you create assignments, send out materials and quizzes. Please see our Google assignment video tutorial for more information on this. The next tab is people, where you can add and remove students and teachers. And lastly, grades, which is where you can monitor the progress of your students' assignments in Google Classroom.

Further to the right, you will see some symbols. The first one is class analytics, which will open in a new tab and use data collected from within Google Classroom to show class analytics. The next symbol is Google Calendar, which will open in a new tab. The next symbol along is Google Drive, which will open a new tab and show all the documents and materials from this particular Google Classroom from within your Google Drive. And lastly, the cog, which is your class settings, the same area as shown to you on the stream page earlier in this tutorial.

On the left-hand side, you will see some tabs. The Home button will take you back to view all the Google Classrooms you are a part of, calendar, which will show any upcoming assignments, and you can filter which Google Classroom calendars you wish to view, and resources. Please see the Google practise set and interactive videos tutorial to find out more about this feature.

In the next tab labelled teaching, you will see a tab labelled to review, which is a quick way to see any classwork that has been submitted to you and is ready to review and return to your students. The teaching tab will show any Google Classrooms you are a teacher of. You may see an enrolled tab here, which will show you any classes you are a student of. This might be as you joined one during a professional learning session, or perhaps a fellow colleague when testing out what the student experience might be like. Archived classes can be found here.

The last tab is Settings, where you can change the notifications you receive from Google Classroom. Please stay tuned for more Google tutorials and make sure you take a look at our other videos for more in-depth information on particular components of Google Classroom.
