This is the transcript of the 'Homepage essentials' video.
Speaker 1
In this video, we'll cover best practise for accessing your DOE Canva for Education account, and a brief look at some of the key features on Canva's homepage. Canva for Education is an amazingly versatile tool that is free for all staff and students within the New South Wales Department of Education. The best way to access Canva for Education and to ensure you are signed in correctly is to log in via the Canva Essential in your staff portal. Canva for Education utilises the Department of Education's single sign-on or SSO capability, meaning you'll always sign in using your current DOE email and password.
Once signed in, your screen will load onto Canva's home screen. This screen has a lot going on, so let's break down some of its most useful features. In the top left corner, you'll have the option to switch between your different Canva teams. Some staff may only have a single team, your school. This is quite common. However, if you do have more than one team, you just need to be aware of what team is selected when viewing and editing designs. Simply use the drop-down arrow next to the team name to view and switch teams.
Now running down the left-hand side, under the home button, we have Magic Studio. This is a portal into Canva's amazing AI features. From here, you can design presentations, write efficiently, transform and create using Canva's intelligent AI tools. Projects. Within the projects section, you can see all your recent designs as well as folders you have created or been shared into, as well as all your templates and uploaded media. Projects is basically all of your content on a single page. This section can also be accessed from within a design.
Templates
This is a huge library of Canva-created templates for every type of design, from presentations, posters and videos, to a range of classroom-focused resources. Take the time to click through some of the different categories. And always remember, the search bar is there where you can type exactly what you're looking for. Brand. This is where you can create and manage a brand template for your school, including a colour palette, templated designs, logos, and even a brand voice. Be aware, you will need admin access to your school's Canva team to manage the brand section. This will be coming soon to Department of Education Schools.
Apps
This is a collection of apps that can be used to enhance designs and the design process. Be aware, many of these third-party apps are not owned or managed by Canva, and often require a separate login of some kind. The majority of these are only available for staff use. Classwork. Here you can see all the designs and creations your students have returned to you for review. Starred content. Here you'll see any folders or designs you have starred for quick access. This can be useful if you are often working on the same design or you have your designs organised within folders.
Invite members
This can be used to invite any staff or students that are not automatically added to your school team via the single sign-on process. You have the option of sharing a join link, code, or inviting directly via email. Create class. This can be used in two ways. The more obvious of the two is to create a class for your students. This allows you to share templates and designs easily with all your students at once. Be aware that currently, a Canva class is more like a group or folder than something like a Google Classroom or Microsoft class team. It is most like a Google shared drive in the way that it works.
If you already have a Google Classroom or Microsoft Team set up, you can always use those to distribute Canva templates and designs. The second way create a class can be used is to create a working group folder for staff. This can be either grade, stage, or faculty based. And an office group can be a great option too. Think of creating a class like creating a permission group that can be added to different folders and designs for streamlined collaboration and sharing. Lastly is the trash. Designs and uploaded images and videos that have been deleted can be found and recovered or permanently deleted here. Canva for Education. What will you design today?
