Transcript of 'Using Themes in Keynote' video

This is the transcript of the 'Using Themes in Keynote' video.

Speaker 1:

Keynote is an exciting application that can bring students' presentations to life with a few simple taps. Let's take a look at how to use Keynote in the classroom using an iPad. Firstly, open the Keynote application on the iPad. If you are not familiar with how to use Keynote, please refer to the introductory video earlier in this series. Create a new presentation. Let's take a look at themes. Looking across the top titles, you'll see many areas that suggest the mood of your presentation. It is important to remind students that every design is customisable, so it is important to be able to see past the demonstration content that is shown in the template. I'm going to choose the editorial cream theme. Once opened, you can get straight to work editing the suggested template. The first thing I would like to do is alter the colours of this theme. Firstly, I need to select a slide. Then I can hit the format button and begin manipulating the background of the slide and the contents it has included. I'm going to toggle body off as I do not need this written content.

I'm now going to change the background. I'm going to select dynamic to make my presentation a little more stimulating. There is multiple themes you can select from. I can alter the colours, the motion of the graphics, and the size of the components. Now I will update the title. I will also edit the format of the title to make it stand out. I am going to add a further text box by heading to the shapes menu and selecting text box. Again, format this to your desire. To see what the presentation looks like currently, I can test it by placing it into the present mode using the play button. Let's add an additional slide. Firstly, I hit the plus icon in the bottom left corner. Select the slide you would like to use. Remove things that you may not require. I'm going to add an additional text box, an area for a second title. If at all you decide you do not like your changes, you can reset the slide layout by selecting the slide and hitting format and then choosing the option reapply slide layout. Pictures can also be changed.

You'll see each of the place holding images has a plus button in the lower right corner. Simply tap this and choose how you would like to replace the image. The newly inserted image would take the same format as the place holding image. Double tap the image and you'll be able to resize or crop as desired. A great thing about the iPad is that students can take real photos and videos from their environment straight from within the app and include these in their presentation using the camera option under the insert media tab. Let's take our presentation to the next level by animating our components. There is two ways this can be done. Simply select the component and choose animate from the pop-up menu or select the object and choose animate from the ellipsis menu. You can add a build-in, which is how the object will enter the presentation. And the same for a build-out, which will be its exit. You can also add an action, which can be prompted during the presentation. For example, I will add a path.

Once it is added, I can tap this action and format it to play on a tap or automatically and I can control the speed. Again, to test how this looks, you can return to the present view and test your work. Of course, students will require some time to publish their presentation, but when they're done, they can send their peers or teacher a copy of the presentation by using the AirDrop function under the sharing menu. This is where you can also save to a cloud storage platform such as OneDrive or Google Drive or you could also save to the local storage on the iPad. Students can also display their presentation on the classroom's main learning display. If it has compatible streaming software such as AirServer installed, simply swipe down from the top right-hand corner and select the screen mirroring option and choose the appropriate device to connect.
