This is the transcript of the "Setting up your classroom" video.
Speaker 1:
Hi there. Today we are going to learn how to use the Apple Classroom app for the iPad. We're going to learn how to create a class within the Classroom app, and we're going to also learn how to connect students into that particular classroom. Just a few things to mention before we get started. There are multiple ways of adding students to the Classroom app. However, today we are going to do it manually. You can also add students through your mobile device management system, but again, we're going to do it manually today. It is also important that the teacher device and the student devices are all on the same wi-fi network. Before you start the process, let's start creating your first classroom. You'll need to enter the Apple Classroom app on the teacher device. Keep in mind that the students do not need to have the Apple Classroom application on their devices. In order to enter the classroom one of the first things that we need to do is to create a class.
To do this, click on Create Class. From this point, enter your class credentials and customise your classroom however you like. Once you have built your class, press the Done button. Once this has occurred, click on the new classroom that you have created. In this case, it's called Penguins. In the centre of the screen, there is a button that says, Invite Students. Click on this button. You'll now notice that there is a class code on the screen. This is what your students will use to access the classroom. Now we will show both the teacher screen and the student's screen. On the student's screen, click or tap the Settings button. Assuming your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, you'll see a classroom option appear as a menu option. Click on the Classroom option in the Settings menu, you should see all the classes that have been created. Students will have the ability to adjust some features in this section, such as an automatic connection to the classroom once the class has been started by the teacher each lesson, and the ability to allow different experiences for the device while connected to the classroom.
A good recommendation would be to ensure student devices are set to Always for the Locked App and Device, plus the AirPlay and View screen sections. This will give the teacher and the students the best experience with the Classroom application. Let's start and join a class. In this case, we are going to click or tap on the Penguins class that was created earlier. Students will click underneath where it says my information. From here, the student will be able to add or edit their name. This is what will appear within the Apple Classroom. Once the student has finished typing their name, they will press the add Penguins button to finalise the naming process. Students will then be prompted to type in the class code that has been generated by the teacher. From here, students will type in the invite code. Once the student has completed typing in their invite code, they will press the add button.
After this has occurred, the student's name will appear on the teacher's screen within the Apple Classroom application. On that teacher screen, ensure that the name has been ticked, and you can then press the add button. That student has now been added to your classroom. If you need to add a student or multiple students to your class after you have created the initial class, it's easy. You will be provided with another join code by selecting the three dots menu in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Now, select invite students. Another secure code will be created that can be shared with your students for them to join the class immediately. Just follow the process mentioned earlier on in this video on the student's device within the Settings app.
Some schools have iPads that are shared between students and classes. A good time-saving practice when working with iPads that are shared across the school between students might be to simply label the device with a generic name and then assign to students within the classroom. The name of the iPad can be adjusted in the setting setup on each student device by selecting the class that you are already connected into, or in the initial setup as explained earlier in this video. In this example, I will rename this device to Student One by clicking on the name of the class, removing the old name, and entering in Student One. I can then assign this device to a student of my choosing within my class setting. A handy tip is to allocate devices to students in a way that you will remember, such as in a seating plan or in alphabetical order.
