Transcript of 'Google Classroom - Assignments' video

This is the transcript of the 'Google Classroom - Assignments' video.

Speaker 1:

Hi. In this video, we are going to explore how to set up an assignment in Google Classroom. In just a few moments, you'll learn how to seamlessly integrate assignments, streamline grading, and enhance your students' learning experience. First, log into your Google Classroom via the portal. Once you're in, select the class where you want to create an assignment. Next, go to the Classwork tab. Here you'll see a blue Create button. Click on it and you'll see there is an option for topic, which allows you to group assignments and tasks. For example, into term or key learning area groups. You can select reuse a post, which can be handy for those teaching a few classes from the same subject or your group. Material, which allows you to post materials to your students that they may wish to view for upcoming units of work. You can also post a question or a quiz assignment, which will generate a Google Form as part of your assignment to your students, a quick and easy way to check for understanding. For today's tutorial, choose Assignment from the drop-down menu.

Now give your assignment a title and provide any necessary instructions. In the next section, you'll have the ability to attach any materials to the assignment. The first icon is the Google Drive button, which allows you to attach a file from your Google Drive, for example, a template or a stimulus. The next option is the YouTube option, where you can attach a YouTube video that might be useful for the task or video activity. Please see our video tutorial on practise sets and video activities for more information on that feature. The next option is the Create button, which is where you choose what type of file you want and how you wish the students to engage with that file. When you attach a file type, depending on which type of file you choose, you'll have three options.

Option one, students can view the file. Option two, students can edit the file and option three, make a copy for each student. For example, you may want it to be a Google Slide, which is a presentation on the content covered in that class, and you just want your students to be able to view it or it may be a Google Sheet that you want all students to be able to edit and collaborate on together. Or the last option, you may want it to be just a Google Doc that all students have their own copy and they will therefore be working independently on it. The next options are practise sets and read along. Please see our video tutorials to find out more about those.

Then you have the upload option, which allows you to upload files from your device. And lastly, link, which is how you can share a link to your students that may direct them to some content for the assignment. On the right-hand side is where you'll have options around which classes you want to send this assignment to. Very handy if you teach maybe a subject across a few classes and can therefore send to more than one class. Next, you have the option of assigning to the whole class or differentiating the task based on class groupings. This can be really useful in multi-stage classrooms. You can then set a due date and specify a topic if desired.

The grading section is below where you can set a category, determine the amount of points possible on an assignment, set a grading period, and even attach a rubric for students to utilise. The last tick box is to check plagiarism, another very handy feature to assist you when grading students' work. Once everything is set, click Assign to post it immediately or schedule it for later. Your students will now see the assignment in their Classwork tab, and that's it. You successfully set up and use Google Assignments and in Google Classroom. Stay tuned for more Google tutorials.
