Transcript of 'Microsoft - Immersive Reader' video

This is the transcript of the 'Microsoft - Immersive reader' video.

Speaker 1:

Hi there. In this video we will look at Immersive reader, a tool built into many Microsoft applications, including Edge browser, Word, PowerPoint, and even Minecraft Education Edition. Let's open Edge browser and navigate to a website.

To activate Immersive reader, go up to the address bar, click the three dots and select the Immersive reader icon, which looks like a book with a speaker. This will simplify the webpage layout, removing advertisements and other distracting features, leaving the text and relevant images. On the top right-hand corner of the screen are three tools; Read aloud, Text preferences, and Reading preferences.

Read aloud will read back the text on the screen and is great for students who find it challenging to read. Text preferences allows you to adjust the text size, text spacing, the font, text column style, and also change the page themes to make it easier to read. Lastly, Reading preferences allows you to toggle on Line focus, meaning Immersive reader will highlight parts of the text at a time, whether that be one line, three lines, or five lines.

You can also translate the entire page into many different languages. Choose the language, then toggle on Translate entire page. Some websites may have a complex structure and so Immersive reader may not be available. If this is the case, you can still select a section of text, right click and choose Immersive reader.

Additional features for Immersive reader are also available in the browser version of Microsoft Word. In the ribbon menu, click View, then select Immersive reader. You will now see grammar options appear in the top right-hand corner. You can toggle Syllables on and off, as well as various parts of Speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. And you can also show their labels.

Under Reading preferences, you will now see the option to turn on Picture dictionary. This will give students the option of selecting a word that they didn't know the meaning of and a picture or pictures will be displayed, which will aid their comprehension.

Another great feature under Reading Preferences is Reading practise. This is where students can read back the text on the screen, for example a story they've written, and get feedback on how well they have read it. Simply click Record and read the text. When they have completed the recording, they will see a reading report with accuracy, correct words per minute, and some words to practise.

Keep your eye out for Immersive reader in other Microsoft applications, like PowerPoint, Minecraft for Education and Microsoft Forms.
